“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
My Excellent Library
I have several bookish (read: nerdy) degrees; a BA in Literature, a MA in Humanities and a MLS (Master of Library Science). These degrees were pursued with the thought that I could spend my entire life reading books, talking about books and recommending books. So far, so good.
But I wanted to do more. I wanted to share my experiences building my personal library. There are so many books out there and so many ways of accessing them; I want to be a place where people can come and get an idea about a book before they plunk down the cold hard cash (or enter that One-Click code at Amazon) on a hardcover, paperback or eBook.
The idea is this: I build my personal library by reading (and rereading) books and reviewing them based on the following system:
Five Star: I’m buying this in hardcover for my personal library. It’s worth owning, and reading repeatedly
Four Star: This book is wonderful! I’ll definitely buy it and loan it out!
Three Star: I read it, I enjoyed it. I’ll keep a copy in paperback or on my kindle. A worthwhile read.
Two Star: I read it…I read it and got through it and it’s not the worst book I’ve ever read. Enter at your own risk.
One Star: I read it. I don’t recommend it. Something is painfully wrong (writing, editing, pacing, etc.)
I give every book I read a fair chance (at least three times being picked up to read, or 100 pages, whichever comes first). If you are a publisher or author who would like for me to consider a title for a book review, please e-mail me.
